George Spence is the author of "The Night of the Shooting Stars" and "The Spence House." A retired architectural precast concrete contractor, Army veteran, photographer, and lifelong student of history and science, he has spent decades building both structures and stories.
After graduating from the University of Alabama, he served eight years as a Regular Army officer, including combat service as a military advisor in Vietnam's Central Highlands during the Battle of Plei Me in 1965 and later commanded paratroopers in the 82nd Airborne Division. Following his military career, he helped build more than two thousand architectural precast concrete projects across the Southeast during a forty-eight-year career in construction, including Atlanta's iconic King and Queen towers and the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga.
Following retirement, Spence returned to a lifelong love of writing. His work explores memory, family, war, resilience, craftsmanship, and the enduring sense of wonder that began when, as a six-year-old boy, he watched a sky filled with shooting stars. His writing combines the eye of an engineer with the heart of a storyteller.
George lives in Dalton, Georgia, in the modernist concrete home he and his late wife, Rhenda, designed and built together. When he is not writing, he enjoys photography, astronomy, reading, and spending time with friends and family.
