Reech Malual is a South Sudanese poet, author, legal scholar, journalist, and peace advocate whose work bridges constitutional law, media ethics, and conflict resolution in one of the world's youngest nations (The Republic of South Sudan).
Academic Background
Malual earned both a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Laws from the University of Juba, followed by an Executive Diploma in Advanced Research from Robert Kennedy College, Switzerland. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Constitutional Law at Parul University, India; a trajectory that fuses rigorous legal scholarship with frontline media practice, lending him a rare vantage point on governance, press freedom, and post-conflict reconstruction.
Legal Practice
Malual holds a License of Legal Practice from the South Sudan Bar Association, where he previously served as Deputy Spokesman. His private practice leadership roles have included Senior Partner at Badri Law Africa and Managing Partner at Ancestral Advocates. He currently leads Akumric Law House as its Managing Partner, advising on matters at the intersection of constitutional law, media regulation, and governance reform.
Journalism & Consulting
His career spans reporting, correspondence, editing, and television management at outlets including UN Radio Miraya, Citizen Television, and The Business Focus Newspaper. As a media consultant, he has partnered with the Media Authority of South Sudan, Journalists for Human Rights, the Juba Monitor, and the Catholic Radio Network to advance media development across the country.
Honors & Fellowships
Malual has been selected for two of Africa's most prestigious leadership programs: the Generation Change Fellowship at the United States Institute of Peace and the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. He has also received the Spirit of Detroit Leadership Award from the Detroit City Council and a Poet Award from Wayne State University, a reflection of both leadership and creative distinction.
Peace Journalism
At the heart of Malual's work lies peace journalism. In a fragile political landscape where instability routinely threatens media freedom, he investigates how reporting can inflame or de-escalate conflict. Through fieldwork, he champions an ethical, independent press capable of sustaining peacebuilding under severe political and economic constraints. His research illuminates the nexus between media influence, social stability, and journalistic integrity in fragile states.
Books
Malual is the author of Journalism in Theory and Practice, and The Supremacist's Illusion: America's Greatest Fear, among other works. His writing marries courtroom precision with editorial instinct and lived experience in conflict zones, making it essential reading for students of law, journalism, peace and conflict studies, and international affairs.
