J. P. Brookes is a British author with a lifelong fascination for music, social history and the moments when ordinary lives collide with something inexplicable.
The idea for his debut novel, Ticket to the Void, began with a Facebook post asking a simple but unsettling question: what would it do to the mind of someone who fell asleep in 1970 and woke up in 2025?
That question became the starting point for Danny Brockman’s story—an eighteen-year-old music fan who attends the Isle of Wight Festival in August 1970 and finds himself displaced more than fifty years into the future.
Inspired by the music, people and counterculture of the late 1960s and early 1970s, as well as John’s lifelong love of Hawkwind, Ticket to the Void blends historical detail, mystery and speculative fiction with a deeply human story about lost time, family, identity and belonging.
Before turning seriously to fiction, John spent much of his working life in construction and later became a chartered health and safety consultant. That practical background, together with his interest in people, places and forgotten histories, helps shape the realism and detail of his writing.
He lives in Dorset with his wife, Nicky, and is currently working on Over the Top, the second novel in the Continuum series.
The story ends. The echo remains.
