Frederick Portillo

Frederick J. Portillo is a writer, field technician, and lifelong San Diego native based in Chula Vista. He writes about family, culture, survival, and the places that made him — in language the rest of us can wrap our heads around.

His debut collection Carne Asada & Pan Dulce draws from a bicultural childhood straddling two worlds and belonging fully to both. His second book, What Grows in the Cracks, follows morning walks through San Diego with his dog Nena, weaving plant knowledge, family memory, and survival philosophy rooted in the wisdom of the women who raised him.

He writes in parking lots, on work breaks, and by flashlight while everyone else sleeps. He believes a good story — like a good taco — should leave you wanting more.
