Mark A. Gabriel

Dr. Mark A. Gabriel is an internationally recognized scholar of Islamic law, international human rights, and contemporary Muslim societies. Educated at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, he earned a PhD in International Law and Islamic Criminal Law from the University of Cape Town in 2016, with doctoral research examining the tension between international human-rights law and Islamic criminal law. He is the author of thirteen books, including Liberating Islam, which have collectively been translated into more than forty languages.

Dr. Gabriel has lectured, conducted training, and provided consultation across the United States, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. He has advised governments and security institutions on understanding and countering radical Islamist movements. During the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, he provided counsel directly to President George W. Bush and received a personal letter from the President thanking him for his counsel. He has also delivered presentations at the FBI Academy in Quantico, the House of Lords in London, the Swiss Parliament, and South Korea's National Intelligence Service.

Through his research and writing, Dr. Gabriel distinguishes ordinary Muslims from political movements that employ religion as an instrument of power. His work seeks to advance human dignity, responsible reform, freedom of conscience, and peaceful coexistence between Muslims and non-Muslims.
