Nathan Cross

Nathan Cross writes emotionally honest fiction about love, marriage, and the quiet distance that can grow between two people who still care about each other. His stories live in the space between what people feel and what they are willing to say out loud, and in the cost of finally telling the truth.

Drawn to characters who are ordinary on the surface and complicated underneath, Cross writes about the people most novels overlook: couples who look fine from the outside, men who were never taught how to be open, and women who are tired of loving someone they can't quite reach. His work blends the emotional pull of contemporary romance with the depth of literary women's fiction, with no easy villains, just real people trying to become more themselves.

His debut novel, The Cost of Being Real: A Story of Marriage, Honesty, and Letting Go, follows Shaun Caldwell through a marriage tested by years of unspoken truth, and asks whether love can survive once both people stop pretending.

Cross lives in the Pacific Northwest, where gray skies and long conversations shape much of his writing. When he isn't writing, he's usually listening: to strangers, to friends, and to the things people almost say.
