Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. 'I have more privilege than any person in my family. And I'm still screwed.' From award-winning author Olivia Wenzel comes a captivating and unsettling literary debut about race, politics, feminism, motherhood, nationality and enduring love. A young woman attends a play about the Berlin Wall coming down and is the only Black person in the audience. She is sitting with her boyfriend by a bathing lake and four neo-Nazis show up.In New York, she witnesses Trump's election victory in a strange hotel room and later awakes to panicked messages from friends.Engaging in a witty question and answer with herself, the narrator looks at our rapidly changing times and tells the story of her family: her mother, who was a punk in East Germany and never had the freedom she dreamed of and her absent Angolan father. But in the background of everything is the memory of her twin brother, who died when they were nineteen.Heart-rending, opinionated and wry, Olivia Wenzel's remarkable debut novel is a clear-sighted investigation into origins and belonging, the roles society wants to force us into and why we need to resist them, and the freedoms and fears that being the odd one out brings. 'So exuberant, inventive, brainy, sensitive and hilarious that it's like a pyrotechnic flare illuminating the whole woman, past and present, radiant, unique, a voice and a novel to take with us into the future.' FRANCISCO GOLDMAN, author of Monkey Boy 'Bold and exceptional . . . Her impressive writing, born of a brilliant mind, surprises - stylistically, and by its frankness and associations . . . I rode in the passenger seat, beside the beauty and strangeness of 1000 Coils of Fear.' LYNNE TILLMAN, author of Men and Apparitions and Mothercare 'An audacious and disturbing novel.' MICHELLE DE KRETSER, author of Scary Monsters 'An exciting, confident debut.' Publishers Weekly 'Impressive, relentless, tender.' Faz 'I have more privilege than any person in my family. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The extraordinary and exciting story of East Germany's first Black police officer.Samuel Meffire grew up as a Black German in East Germany and, against all odds, became East Germany's first Black police officer. In the nineties, marked by upheaval and unrest, he was the face of an anti-racism campaign, received invitations to politicians' receptions, talk shows and numerous media appearances. But as Europe changed, he slipped from being a model policeman into crime himself, eking out his days as a hunted criminal and prisoner. After seven years in prison, Meffire fought his way back to life and once again went to the front lines of social upheaval, but this time not as a police officer, but as a social worker for young people with a serious history of violence, and as a successful indie author of dystopian crime novels. In his memoir, Samuel Meffire gives an intimate insight into his emotional world. In the background and with an almost brutal frankness, he grippingly recounts his life across several continents and, looking back, gives us a fascinating insight into an overlooked period of history. The extraordinary and exciting story of East Germany's first Black police officer, coming soon to Disney Plus! Paperback. Condition: New. A new reading of Fassbinder's most popular film that highlights the roles of race and gender. The Marriage of Maria Braun is the most popular film by the enfant terrible director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, the leading exponent of the "New German Cinema" of the early sixties to early eighties. It exemplifies his use and abuse of the genre of melodrama. Set in the immediate postwar period and centered around a strong female protagonist, Maria Braun (1978) was the first film in a trilogy that attempts to work through West Germany's fraught past and the legacy of Nazi Germany through the eyes of characters marginalized by their gender, race, sexuality, or (dis)ability. Maria attempts to navigate the poverty and sexism of the immediate postwar years by making her relationships with men, including the Black American G.I., Bill, as beneficial as possible. In the end, she discovers she has been a pawn in a power game between her husband, Hermann, for whom she has been pining while he has been in prison, and her lover, the industrialist Oswald. Yet Maria is also complicit in racism and white patriarchy, a fact that scholarship on the film has barely registered. In her new reading, Priscilla Layne draws on archival research, Critical Race Theory, Black Feminist Thought, and Critical Whiteness Studies to expand on the role of race and gender in the film.…

Softcover. Condition: As New. Leichte Kratzer / Abnutzungen / Druckstellen. Librarian Marcela Ortiz has been secretly in love with her best friend for years-and when he gets engaged, she knows it's long past time to move on. But before she gets the chance, she has a bigger problem to contend with in the form of Theo Young, ex-NFL player and older brother of the man she's in love with. When she discovers Theo's plans to confess his feelings for his brother's fiancée at their engagement party, Marcela is quick to stop him-despite how tempting it is to let him run away with the bride-to-be. She manages to convince Theo to sleep off his drunken almost-mistake at her place and when they arrive at a family brunch the next day together, everyone wrongly assumes they hooked up. Since Theo needs a cover for his feelings for the bride and Marcela needs a distraction from her unrequited feelings for the groom, they decide to roll with the lie. Until one late night at a bar, they take it a step further and discover a layer of attraction neither realized existed. Soon, they find themselves exploring the simmering chemistry between them, whether in library aisles or Marcela's bed. There are no boundaries for the rebound relationship they form-just a host of complicated feelings, messy familial dynamics, and uncovered secrets that threaten to tear them apart before they can even admit to themselves that their rebound is working. Maybe a little too well.…
