Denn die Neueren verdanken ihnen die wesentlichsten Ideen der allgemei nen Grammatik, von welcher alle Sprachkunde zuerst ausgehen mufs. Die besondere, immer auf die philosophisch genaue Bezeichnung der gramma tischen Begriffe gerichtete Natur ihrer Sprache leitete sie von selbst darauf hin. Aber bei aller Stärke, Tiefe und Regsamkeit des Sprachsinnes gelang ten die Griechen nie zu dem Punkt, auf welchem das Bedurfnifs der Erler nung fremder Sprachen, um der Sprache willen, fühlbar wird. Sie erhoben sich zu dem reinen Begriffe derselben; dafs es aber ein geschichtliches Stu dium der Sprachen geben könnte, welches, auf )enem einseitig verfolgten Wege uner1eichbare, allgemeine � bersichten gewäh1te, blieb ihnen fremd.
