An exploration of the works of German painter Christian Rohlfs (1849-1938), highlighting his artistic evolution from Neo-Impressionism to Expressionism and ultimately to his unique style. It serves as an introduction to English-speaking audiences, offering authentic reproductions and scholarly interpretation of Rohlfs' contributions to modern art. The author, Paul Vogt, presents Rohlfs as a pioneering figure who bridged traditional and avant-garde movements, with influences from artists such as Gauguin, Cezanne, Munch, and van Gogh. The book examines Rohlfs' themes, techniques, and artistic independence in a period of increasing commercialization of art. [From front jacket flap] Even though art connoisseurs in English speaking countries have long had a yearning for an authentic biography and interpretation of the work of Christian Rohlfs, neither English nor American publishers have undertaken the very stimulating task of publishing one, and of acquainting those with bona fide reproductions of Rohlfs' work who may not as yet be acquainted with the master. To be sure, the definitive works on Rohlfs in the German language were published only four and six years ago simply because it took that long to collect and collate the widely scattered material which a scholarly biography and an authoritative interpretation require. In Paul Vogt who is the author of those definitive Rohlfs' books in German, the publishers of the present volume found and were happy to find the conscientious and reliable writer of this Rohlfs book. It is particularly important to remind the reader that it is not an English edition of a work available in another language; instead, it is a work especially written for English and American art experts and, of course, for everyone who wants to have a complete understanding of the painters in the early part of our century. . .
