Its central claim is that Jesus of Nazareth was a black revolutionary who led a nation to free his people from white Rome. The sermons take the synoptic Gospels and the Old Testament prophets as their authority and reject the individual, otherworldly salvation that Cleage attributes to Paul. Across the collection he deals with slave identity, how slavery was made Christian, and the religious basis of Black Power, and he calls on black churches to reread Christianity for the needs of black liberation. Sermons include "An Epistle to Stokely," "Brother Malcolm" and "Dr. King and Black Power.".
