Cleage, Jr., pastor of the Central United Church of Christ in Detroit, gathered into a single volume of 278 pages and issued by Sheed and Ward in 1968. The sermons set out an interpretation of the Black Power movement in explicitly theological terms, arguing that Jesus of Nazareth was the non-white leader of a non-white people struggling for national liberation against Rome, and that the Nation of Israel was itself a mixture of Chaldeans, Egyptians, Midianites, Ethiopians, Kushites, Babylonians and other dark peoples already intermixed with the peoples of Central Africa. Cleage joins prayer and religious ritual to political action, economic pressure, and Black control of Black communities, and reframes the Resurrection as the resurrection of a nation. Preached at the height of the Black Power movement in Detroit and in the aftermath of the 1967 rebellion, the sermons form the platform from which Cleage would later develop Black Christian Nationalism.
