Lullo fu teologo, filosofo e scrittore catalano. Maestro di casa di re Giacomo II, condusse vita di corte, finché, poco più che trentenne, avvertì la vocazione religiosa. Viaggiatore instancabile, percorse tutta l'Europa meridionale per attuare un ambizioso programma missionario. Scriveva, in catalano e in latino, in arabo e in provenzale, senza per questo tralasciare la disputa teologica, l'opera catechista ed evangelizzatrice, la contemplazione, la polemica conciliare e capitolare. L'opera più nota è Lo sconforto (Lo desconhort, 1295), nato dalla desolazione dell'autore di fronte al rifiuto opposto dal papa ai suoi progetti di evangelizzazione dei musulmani; previsti come Crociata! Prospettiva fondamentale del pensiero e dell'opera di Lullo è l'idea di missione per convertire gl'infedeli e instaurare l'unità della fede. L'arte mnemonica, stabilendo, con i principi, i modi dei loro rapporti, dovrebbe indicare tutte le possibili combinazioni e offrire una visione totale della realtà costituendo una scienza unitaria da cui non restano escluse né le scienze fisiche né la teologia (della quale l'arte intende dimostrare le verità fondamentali). De' Crescenzi Pietro 1233-1320, agronomo bolognese scrive tra il 1304 e il 1309, L' Opus ruralium commodorum , considerato il più importante trattato di agronomia medievale. Per dichiarazione stessa dell'Autore, il testo si basa su tre tipi di fonti: autori antichi, i moderni e l'esperienza personale. L'organizzazione dell'opera rivela molta originalità in rapporto a quelle antiche, ed è destinata ad un pubblico socialmente ben definito nell'Italia del 1300: quello della borghesia che aveva costruito un patrimonio nel contado. Proprio il carattere di enciclopedia pratica spiega il successo che il trattato ebbe tra la prima metà del XIV e la fine del XVI secolo. Il testo è strutturato in 12 capitoli in cui vengono esaminati tutti gli aspetti necessari per una buona conduzione delle cose della villa: la scelta del sito dove costruire l'abitazione, le piante e la coltura delle diverse qualità delle terre e dei campi, i frutii, le viti e il vino, gli alberi da frutto, le erbe, i prati, il giardino, gli animali, gli uccelli rapaci, cose da fare mese in mese. Nel 1561 l'editore dell'opera il Veneziano Francesco Sansovino lamenta nelle precedenti pubblicazioni una inadeguata traduzione del testo dal latino al volgare, tale da rendere in molti casi incomprensibili alcuni importanti passaggi. Decide quindi di dedicarsi ad una nuova edizione corretta. Proprio per compiere questa accurata traduzione, il Sansovino si rende conto delle continue citazioni che il Crescenzi fa del Palladio, chiamandolo Maestro dell'Agricoltura . Decide perciò di legare al volume anche l'opera del nobile e antico autore, il quale per ordine de mesi raccoglie tutte le operazioni che si fanno in villa. In entrambi i volumi sono presenti un vocabolario generale dei termini più desueti usati dagli autori e un indice degli argomenti trattati. 2 voll.in custodia.

Floral border around title (at the top of which is a cat and mouse, similar to the image used by Sessa), and floriated initials at the beginning of each of the 12 books. Modern vellum binding, reusing an 18th-century morocco label; tail edge of text block titled in contemporary manuscript. Title with small oil stain transferring to following several leaves until disappearing at the fifth leaf, outer conjugate of first and last gatherings guarded, last leaf extended at fore-margin with Japanese mending tissue. Good, crisp copy. A sixteenth-century Italian translation of "Ruralia commoda," one of very few treatises on agronomy to appear during the Middle Ages, and the first printed modern text on agriculture when it was published in 1471. The book's enormous influence over Italian agriculture is evident even today in the rural Tuscan landscape, The manual covers all aspects of maintaining a productive farming household, including hydrology, organization of land and dwelling, planting, growing, harvesting, wines and wine-making, olive trees and their fruit, the cultivation of fruit trees but also of cedar and woodland trees, care of livestock, control of insects and pests, and on and on. The text was reprinted some 57 times in all the major European languages, including Polish, before 1700!
