Álvaro de Luna (c. 1390-1453), Condestable de Castilla y Maestre de Calatrava, fue un hombre de estado, un estratega, un político de alto calibre que supo moverse en las difíciles aguas de la corte castellana en el ocaso de la Edad Media. Aunque la vida política haya eclipsado su labor como erudito y literato, Luna cuenta con un «corpus» escritural nada desestimable. Holzstich ( anonym ), 21,7 x 16,3 (H) Jan van Eyck gilt als der berühmteste Vertreter der altniederländischen Malerei. Er leitete die neue naturalistische Kunstepoche nördlich der Alpen ein. Wegen seiner vollendeten Technik und seines Sinns für Naturalismus wurde er von vielen Autoren sogar als 'König unter den Malern' bezeichnet. Die Annahme, dass es sich bei Hubert van Eyck um den Bruder Jan van Eycks handelt, lässt sich nach neuesten Forschungserkentnissen nicht mehr aufrechterhalten. Über das Leben von Hubert ist sehr wenig bekannt; sicher weiß man nur, dass er sich 1421-22 in Gent in die religiöse "Genossenschaft der Maria mit den Strahlen" einschreiben ließ. Zu großem Ruhm kam Hubert van Eyck durch die Inschrift auf dem Rahmen des Genter Altares. Die Inschrift ist allerdings, wie eine Röntgenuntersuchung 1950 gezeigt hat, erst nachträglich aufgebracht worden. Sie lautet: PICTOR HUBERTUS EEYCK. MAIOR QUO NEMO REPERTUS INCEPIT. PONDUS. QUE JOHANNES ARTE SECUNDUS (FRATER) PERFECIT. JUDOCI VIJD PRECE FRETUS VERSV SEXTA MAI. VOS COLLOCAT ACTA TVERI Übersetzt: Maler Hubert van Eyck, einen größeren gab es nicht, hat dies Werk begonnen und sein Bruder Johannes, der zweite in dieser Kunst, hat im Auftrag von Jodocus Vijd die schwere Aufgabe vollendet.
