Original red cloth, light discoloration and staining to boards and spine, gilt stamped lettering upon front board remains quite bright, spine's gilt lettering flaked but still legible. Edges toned; past owner's name-address label partially peeled from top corner of front pastedown; light toning and foxing to front and rear endpapers; occasional light foxing to interior leaves which are otherwise quite clean. A very good- copy. OCLC cites 1902, 1903, and 1905 editions of UPPER ROOM MEDITATIONS. Born in Caswell County, North Carolina and with his youth spent in Virginia and Georgia, Oscar Penn Fitzgerald (1829-1911) moved to California in 1855 where he served as Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1867 to 1871. Fitzgerald's western experiences were summarized in his popular "California Sketches" (first published 1879) and "California Sketches; New Series" (published 1881) which were just two of the twenty books he authored. Fitzgerald moved to Tennessee in 1878 where he became editor of the Nashville Christian Advocate and in 1890 Fitzgerald was elected as a bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.…
