No Binding. Condition: VG. Sized about 1.5 x 3 inches, printed in black ink, minor foxing. Label was attached as a bookplate of sorts to a bound volume of The Atlantic Monthly magazine, 1859. Colonel Hugh Young, b. County Down, Killyleagh, Ireland, immigrated at age 18 to Potter County, Pennsylvania, and the home of his elder brother. In 1852, Hugh got work as a clerk in a general store. He entered the law office of John S. Mann, as a student, and supported himself by doing occasional jobs as draftsman, surveyor, bookkeeper, and also writing for newspapers. Throughout his long life and career, he played successively the roles of student, teacher, bookkeeper, war correspondent, editor, soldier, legislator, and banker. He wrote much and contributed from time to time papers on economic and banking subjects. He was a member of the American Academy of Political and Social Science. In 1876 he accepted the nomination and was elected to the Pennsylvania legislature. The following year he was appointed National Bank Examiner and served as such until March 1888 when he retired and established the Wellsboro National Bank, of which he became President. In 1891, he was appointed National Bank Examiner for the City of Pittsburgh and served until December 1903, when he was elected president of the Federal Bank. Young was also president of the Tioga County Savings and Trust Company of Wellsboro. A few years later his inclination for journalism led him to correspond for the New York Tribune during the warfare between the border ruffians of Missouri and the Free State settlers in Kansas. His letters from the field attracted wide attention. As a result, when the Free Soil newspaper, known as the Herald of Freedom, which had been destroyed at Lawrence, Kansas, was reestablished, Young became an associate editor with founder George W. Brown. Young continued in Kansas until after the presidential election of 1856, when he returned to PA. He had been a delegate from Kansas to the first National Republican Convention, held in Philadelphia, and had belonged to the old Whig party. When the Civil War broke out, Young took an active part in raising troops in response to the call of President Lincoln, and himself enlisted in Company F, 35th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. On September 22, 1859, Young married Lois Ann Butterworth, daughter of Appleton and Mary (Wilmot) Butterworth. Young was editor of the Tioga Agitator at the time. A twin brother, Thomas L. Young, was a former Governor of Ohio. Young was President of the Federal National Bank and despite his age at the time of his death was still chairman of the Board of Directors. He was also a director in the American Waterway and Guarantee Company of Pittsburgh. Colonel Young died on October 20, 1912, at his home town, Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, in his 80th year, leaving behind his wife and three sons, Robert, Thomas, and Carl, all of Wellsboro.

Map First Edition
Good. Moderate foxing. Size 3.5 x 5.5 Inches. A masterwork of small-scale engraving, this is J. H. Young's 1832 map of Mexico and Central America, which appeared in Henry Carey and Isaac Lea's Family Cabinet Atlas . It depicts the region in the wake of the collapse of Spain's American empire and on the eve of the westward expansion of the United States of America. A Closer Look Coverage extends from the Pacific Northwest, here as 'New Albion,' south through Panama and east to Haiti. Copious detail is provided on the geography of Mexico and Central America, including the labeling of individual provinces of the United Mexican States, all the more impressive given the map's small scale. Some common cartographic errors of the era, such as the Buenaventura River, are retained. Similarly, 'West Florida' is anachronistically maintained. Texas appears as a province of Mexico. At this time, the Mexican government encouraged immigration to Texas despite its inability to prevent conflict with Native Americans, disputes over several issues including slavery, and a failed secession movement in 1826 - 1827. These lingering problems would come to the fore a few years later with the outbreak of the Texas Revolution. 'Guatimala' retains the borders of the defunct Spanish Captaincy General of Guatemala, but a more accurate reflection of the political situation is demonstrated with the numeric labels. Still, uncertainty remained over borders, particularly around Belize ('Bazlie' here), resulting in Belize (City) being located in Mexico, outside of Belize itself. Publication History and Census This map appeared as Plate 90 in the 1832 (first) edition of Henry Carey and Isaac Lea's 1832 Family Cabinet Atlas . Young had engraved maps of this region as far back as 1825, in Grigg's American Atlas , which may explain some of the anachronisms noted above. The present map is not cataloged in the holdings of any institution in the OCLC and is scarce to the market, while the entire atlas (OCLC 276123103, 276123103) is quite rare, only appearing in four institutional collections.
