New York: Herder and Herder, 1963, 236pp., very good dust-jacket, chipped at top of spine, worn around edges, very good yellow cloth. 14 essays by the Bonn theologian, not particularly well received by Herbert Johnston in the Review of Politics in 1963, who found his positions "sensible" but not "startling," while admiring the adoption of Max Weber's "ethics of responsibility." - "It amounts to a plea for empirical research before an attempt is made at social planning, and cites Max Weber's "ethic of responsibility" as a mean between cynicism and Utopianism." In fact, Schöllgen, in the line of Weber, Freyer and Scheler is interested in a Christian sociology which would determine the real options for action rather than sketch abstract ideals. His goal: to locate the strong spiritual forces which can defend against the destructive influences of collective existence. This is pursued in short essays on Christian sociology, Sin, the Ethics of Entertainment, Psychotherapy and confession, The Political oath, The Right to Resist, pacifism and Christian responsibility, daydreaming, The Movies in the Light of Mental Hygiene, Medical Ethics, The Physician and the Priest, Political Science and Political Ethics.
