Volume 52 Number 2 complete issue. First edition. During Erna Gunther's career, she was instrumental in opening the eyes of both the public and the scholarly community to the importance of Northwest Coast Indian culture. Following the lead of Boas, her scholarship insisted on understanding Native American culture on its own terms by drawing on ethnography, history and archaeology. The exhibit she assembled at the 1939 San Francisco International Exposition introduced Northwest Indian art to the general public, and sparked a revival of interest in the region's great woodcarvers. Her arrangement of Indian art for the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle was wildly popular and earned her tremendous praise. She was a passionate supporter of Native American civil rights, and in the 1950s participated in the founding of the Congress of American Indians. Colour and b/w illustrations by the author, foreword by David M. Newell. Maroon cloth, spine titled in gilt. Marks to cloth, hinges tape-repaired. Good-plus, lacks dust-wrapper. "Countless thousands of us, in the Armed Forces and in private life, must depend almost wholly upon memory for the delights which circumstances deny - days afield with dog and gun, and on stream with rod and reel. But it is memory tempered with hope. For soon the good sun will flood the uplands with a warm, unfading light; and the birthright of a free people will be restored. The excuse for this book, then, is nostalgia. It is my hope that it may, in a small way, help to brighten a few moments of the trying hours which still lie ahead." A number of the pieces in this book originally appeared in Esquire and Field and Stream. "The drawings in black-and-white were made especially for this book. Color plates are from original water colors, and have not been previously reproduced." Chapters include: Bob and Madame White; What makes a fly-caster?; Grousings of a gunner; Fishing at your doorstep; The woodcock are down!; The other side of trout fishing; A touch of frost; Queer angles on angling. .…
