First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Author listed as "Nevil Shute" to title page, and simply "Norway" to spine -- a bit unusual, since Nevil Shute Norway wrote fiction mostly as simply "Nevil Shute," usually reserving his surname for his aeronautical engineering work. (He worked on Britain's failed zeppelin program, and is credited with developing the hydraulic retractable landing gear.) Stamped "Discard" from the First Ward Branch, Binghamton Public Library, Binghamton, N.Y., with standard lending library attachments including manila card-holder to RFE and Rear Pastedown, showing this copy was borrowed approx. 17 times from February1949 through January, 1958. NO dust jacket; 7-7/8 inch octavo; dampstains to edges of several early pages, a reading copy. An elderly British traveler who doesn't much care for children works his way home from the south of France as the Germans cross the Marne, and then the Seine, stopping the trains, in summer 1940. He first agrees to take two, but eventually assembles a gaggle of displaced children of various nationalities who he insists must go to England, even volunteering to stay behind if they're allowed to escape. The 1942 American film -- screenplay by Nunnally Johnson -- starred Monty Woolley, Anne Baxter, a young Roddy McDowall, Otto Preminger, and J. Carrol Naish. Peter O'Toole headlined the 1989 made-for-TV remake. 306 pp.

Magazine / Periodical First Edition
1292-1322 pages with map, tables and cited references. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/2") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Volume 63 Number 6 complete issue. From the library of Robert van Kemper. First edition. The study "Distribution of Hereditary Blood Antigens among American Indians in Middle America: Lacandón and Other Maya" by G. Albin Matson, published in American Anthropologist in 1961 (Vol. 63, Issue 6), examines blood group frequencies in Maya populations, finding that they are predominantly group O, which is typical for American Indian groups. The study also notes the presence of A and B genes, suggesting potential racial crossing, and observes that more isolated Maya communities, such as the Lacandón, Tzeltal, Tzotzil, and Mam, exhibit the highest frequencies of the O gene. Robert V. Kemper, born in San Diego, California, on November 21, 1945, resided in Dallas, Texas, where he was Professor of Anthropology at Southern Methodist University. He received his Ph.D. in Anthropology in 1971 from the University of California at Berkeley and spent the academic year 1971-1972 there as a National Endowment for the Humanities Post-Doctoral Fellow in Mexican American Studies before joining the SMU faculty. At SMU, he served as Chair of the Department of Anthropology, President of the Faculty Senate, and member of the University Board of Trustees. His research interests included migration and urbanization, history of anthropology, community development, tourism, Mexico, and the United States. His numerous publications include Anthropologists in Cities (1974), Migration and Adaptation: Tzintzuntzan Peasants in Mexico City (1977), Migration Across Frontiers: Mexico and the United States (1979), Chronicling Cultures: Long-Term Field Research in Anthropology (2002), and Urban Life (5th ed., 2010). He has served as President of the Society for Latin American Anthropology and the Society for Urban Anthropology, as well as editor of Human Organization, editor for Social-Cultural Anthropology of the American Anthropologist, and associate editor for Urban Anthropology. Condition: Kemper's stamp to front wrapper. Light edge wear, spine sunned, corners gently bumped else very good.
