Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. xiv+341 pages with 2 maps, bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4") issued in black with white and gilt lettering to spine. Civilization of the American Indians series number 187. 1st edition. This, the third volume of Nigel Davies's trilogy on the Toltecs, the author analyzes the successor Aztecs' achievement of empire and the imposing structure that Cortes encountered on his arrival in their capital, Tenochititlan, in 1519. The Aztec Empire lasted almost a century before being conquered by invaders from across the sea, and although Tenochtitlan now lies deep beneath the conquerors' capital, Mexico City, the Aztecs' strategy and statecraft compare with those of the grea empire builders of the Old World. In early chapters the author reviews the myths and early history of the Toltecs, forerunners of the Aztecs. Central to that history is the Aztecs' claim that they were the heirs to the Toltecs of Tula - and hence to the Toltecs' quest for empire. Succeeding chapters describe the Aztecs' brilliant conquest of a large portion of present-day Mexico, examining their motives for conquest; the political and economic conditions in Tenochtitlan; their relations with their ally, Texcoco; and the role of nobles and commoners in conquest and administration of the empire. The book centers on chapters describing in lively detail how the Aztecs made war and how they ruled their world. Through the book, drawing analogies with conquest on other continents, the author offers theories on the Aztecs' motives for conquest. Unlike many scholars, he concludes that their will to conquer arose not solely from religion, nor was it the outgrowth of "historical materialism," "ecological determinism," or any other single, clear-cut factor. On the contrary, their motivation was multiple, fueled by an ever-present sense of their destiny as heirs of the Toltecs. Condition: A near fine copy in like jacket.

Rústica. 01/1981592 p. 17x10 cm. . For the steamer Portland bore two tons of pure Klondike gold. And immediately, the stampede north to Alaska began. Easily as many as 100,000 adventurers, dreamers, and would-be miners from all over the world struck out for the remote, isolated gold fields in the Klondike Valley, most of them in total ignorance of the long, harsh Alaskan winters and the territory's indomitable terrain. Less than a third of that number would complete the enormously arduous mountain journey to their destination. Some would strike gold. Berton's story belongs less to the few who would make their fortunes than to the many swept up in the gold mania, to often unfortunate effects and tragic ends. It is a story of cold skies and avalanches, of con men and gamblers and dance hall girls, of sunken ships, of suicides, of dead horses and desperate men, of grizzly old miners and millionaires, of the land - its exploitation and revenge. It is a story of the human capacity to dream, and to endure.
