A man from John Coffin s past is looking for his identical twin brother a dangerous man, capable of murder. But are their identities one and the same? From one of the most appraised English crime writers, perfect for fans of Agatha Christie. Sad, savage and bitter is what Stella Pinero says to her husband John Coffin, Commander of London's Second City, of the murder case which cuts into both their lives. Coffin is at the height of his powers when he is surprised by a visit from the past: Inspector Harry Trent, with whom Coffin had worked years ago, is looking for his identical twin brother- a dangerous man; a man who might already have killed a woman; a man Trent fears might threaten violence to the Macintoshes, the couple who fostered the twins as children. When Joe and Josie Macintosh are found stabbed to death, Coffin has to discover not only their killer, but their true identities. And even more important is the question hanging over all of them: who is this man called Harry Trent and what is he capable of? The answer lies in the past- bizarre, terrifyingly and horribly real. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First American edition. Charmian Daniels (last seen in Murder in the Garden ), chief metropolitan police superintendent of Central London, interrupts a medical leave when beautiful Vivien Charles, member of a witches' coven, is found fatally stabbed in her home, her corpse surrounded by cult objects. An autopsy reveals that Vivien was pregnant and the fetus deformed. Vivien's fellow witches, still reeling from the shock of her death, are dumbfounded by the finding, but sexy Joshua Fox, the lone male in the coven and laughingly called its warlock, is unsurprised. When Charmian learns that the primary duty of a warlock is to impregnate witches, the hapless man becomes the prime suspect--until he, too, is stabbed in his home. Every clue leads to the coven, but Charmian is unconvinced, and digs into Vivien's past to discover a more pedestrian kind of sorcery that might conjure up a killer. Melville's breezy style is less than spellbinding, but she serves up a balanced brew of career politics, the occult and the psychology of murder. Condition: Near fine in a fine jacket.

ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1997). 1997 1st edition. 8vo (158 x 227mm). Pp256. B/w illustrations from the literature, good bibliography. Green boards, spine titled in gilt. Slight use and tanning but good-plus in slightly used dust-wrapper. An interesting discussion of the authors and literature of Scottish angling, up to the end of the twentieth century, including an anthology of 117 short extracts from the works discussed. An interesting read, and a useful guide to what is available. For the bibliographer and the bluffer (I'm sure the author didn't see it that way, but life is short), Simmonds gives some guidance as to content and quality. Professor Norman Willison Simmonds, ScD, AICTA, FIBiol., was a fly-fisherman, geneticist and internationally renowned expert on tropical food crops, particularly the banana. He began his career as a professional agronomist in the tropics but spent the last forty years of his life as an academic in Scotland. There, he applied himself to trout fishing, in between being Director of the Scottish Plant Breeding Institue and a member of the Edinburgh School of Agriculture, amongst many other positions. He wrote numerous books and countless articles, some on fishing, most on the genetics and practicalities of food crops. .
