Robert Scholes has written an enviable book on the uses and abuses of literary theory in the teaching of literature. One of [his] most forceful points.is that 'literary theory' is not something a teacher may either 'use' or not use, for teaching itself is an unavoidably theoretical activity. Condition: Fine.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. 128 pages. Octavo (8" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. First published in 1973. Growing out of the 1971 Yale University Thomas More lectures which Father Dunne delivered in that year, Time and Myth analyzes the man s confrontation with the inevitability of death in the cultural, personal, and religious spheres, viewing each as a particular kind of myth that takes its form from the impact of time upon the myth. With penetrating simplicity the author poses the timeless dilemma of the human condition and seeks to resolve it through stories of adventures, journeys, and voyages inspired by man s encounter with death; stories of childhood, youth, manhood, and age; and, finally, stories of God and of man wrestling with God and the unknown. The result is a fascinating odyssey of the mind in which one travels through the wonderland of other cultures, lives, and religions only to return with new insight to the homeland of one s own. Condition: Previous owner's name to half title, underlining, corners bumped, edge wear else good to very good.

Octavo (8 3/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's quarter black cloth with gilt lettering to spine over white boards with gilt design to board in original pictorial jacket. First edition. Julie Stone is a young German woman who, losing her father in the Nazi persecutions, finds herself in post-war England, married to a successful professor and the mother of two children. She enjoys the life of the campus, but the facts of her past and of her husband Charles's age, which is nearly twice hers, finally start to take their toll, leading her to an affair with a young student called Sam, which in turn leads all three to new thresholds in their life. This is a very small story where you fancy that friends of Alvarez may have recognized themselves among the cast. There is some pathos surrounding the pompous, portly figure of Charles, but the young lovers Julie and Sam are for the most part dull and not particularly likable figures. Julie's past is indistinct, and though the plot seems to chase it towards a personal resolution, ultimately this is superfluous to her unfaithfulness, or to the themes about generational divides. Condition: Corners bumped. Jacket spine extremities creased, covers lightly soiled.

Life for Pickett seems almost idyllic as he settles in with his dog, Willis, to enjoy a peaceful existence in his cabin. When an arrest is made, Picket questions whether justice has been done. Condition: A fine copy in like jacket.
