Psycho-killings at an English seaside resort: young girls in bikinis start turning up murdered and mutilated. So Lowden (Boudapesti 3) moves the focus around and around--from the cops on the case (one of whom is a young, music-loving, sensitive sort) to a dubiously large array of highly disturbed, highly likely suspects. There's the Polish fellow who runs the merry-go-round (he's previously been accused of peeping and fondling). There's a shopowner named Baxter who's gone bonkers watching TV and once nearly strangled his wife in a fugue state. There's a zonked-out rich kid who acts incredibly guilty--especially when he's found to have a bikini collection. Plus, there's stand-up comedian (and ex-con) Max: he's being blackmailed by a crook-on-the-run who claims to remember from prison days that Max was suspected of killing a young girl back then. Each of the suspects is cleared, however, leaving just Max--especially when another old crony arrives in town (a stunt diver) to add further incriminating evidence from Max's past. And the routine finale is the nice young cop's race to prevent Max (now disguised as an ice-cream vendor in a penguin suit) from killing yet again. Crisply written, often creepy work from a talented writer. Condition: A fine copy in like jacket.

For Chief of Police Susan Wren, investigating a homicide comes with the territory, but when a young friend gets caught in the crossfire, the former big-city cop's routine work becomes a personal mission. When Dr. Dorothy, the dictatorial eldest sister of the five Barringtons (four of whom are doctors practicing together), is shot in her office, the greater part of the tragedy is the critical wounding of the most vulnerable innocent bystander - eleven-year-old Jen Bryant. To make it worse for Susan Wren, Jen was in her care that weekend, while her mother was out of town. As with any homicide investigation, Susan begins her search for the killer with the victim's family, and finds that looks can be deceiving when it comes to the successful, respected Barringtons. Once the facade of a proud and unified family is shattered by Dr. Dorothy's murder, a Pandora's box is opened, and the little Kansas community is plunged into fear and danger. In the emerald island of Yankee Stadium Isaac watches millionaires play baseball, while a few blocks away children smoke crack and wave kitchen knives in the air. This is the borough where wild dogs used to roam the parks. This is the land where an angel paints paeans to fallen gangsters on a wall on Featherbed Lane - paintings so beautiful they could get him killed. This is a place where they call Mayor Isaac Sidel El Caballo - and where El Caballo knows his city is up for grabs. The Yankees' owner wants to take the team from the Bronx. A corrupt lawyer is paving the way in gold and greed. And on the streets of the Bronx gangsters are waging wars of revenge. Obsessed with the Yankees and the young graffiti artist, Isaac discovers a dummy corporation is dumping money into a Bronx real estate scam, and that unlikely bedfellows are forging unholy alliances all around him. Now the mayor of New York is missing again. He's gone with his Glock to the Bronx in search of a boy nicknamed Alyosha who may die for beauty by the side of a jaded little rich girl. His city beyond redemption, his own soul racked by guilt and illusion, El Caballo is going to save the Bronx, or bury his heart there. Condition: Near dine in a fine jacket.
