These Conferences take place every three years, under the auspices of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation, with the purpose of assessing the current research in the field, critically discussing the prog ress made and disclosing the points of paramount im portance which deserve further investigations. The Conference was attended by about 750 scientists active in the various subfields in which the current research on gravitation and general relativity is ar ticulated, and more than 450 communications were sub mitted. In order to fully exploit this great occur rence of experience and creative capacity, and to pro mote individual contributions to the collective know ledge, the Conference was given a structure of work shops on the most active topics and of general sessions in which the Conference was addressed by invited speakers on general reviews or recent major advance ments of the field. The individual communications were collected in a two-volume publication made available to the participants upon their arrival and widely distributed to Scientific Institutions and Research Centres.

Compagine politico-ideologica complessa, contraddittoria e fino ad ora poco indagata nella sua prospettiva di politica estera, il PSLI fu un partito determinante, se non decisivo, per le scelte epocali effettuate dall'Italia negli anni della guerra fredda. Con un profondo scavo documentario a ventaglio, De Felice costruisce un minuzioso corredo critico di informazioni trattate con investigazione sicura e meticolosità maniacale nella verifica di riscontri e dettagli; avvalendosi con scrupolosità e precisione, di disparate fonti italiane, statunitensi e britanniche, l'Autore attraverso una puntigliosa e serrata successione sequenziale e logico-narrativa degli avvenimenti delinea il ruolo trainante svolto da Saragat e dagli altri protagonisti sul processo evolutivo interno al socialismo italiano nel periodo postbellico, sgombrando il campo dagli stereotipi e dai luoghi comuni che hanno sacrificato, troppo spesso, la oggettiva ed articolata complessità della ricerca scientifica alla comodità di preconcetti e superficiali schematismi appassiti. In questo senso, i nodi interpretativi che lo studio mette in luce presentano Saragat ed il PSLI (solo parzialmente) come gli attori di una politica certamente occidentale, che si distingue, d'altra parte, anche fortemente, dalla linea degasperiana per una sua coloritura autonoma verso il terzaforzismo. Nell'indagine defeliciana, che è poi un'analisi pluriprospettica, ogni sfumatura diventa estremamente rivelatrice, con un'impostazione, quindi, che cerca di favorire una reinterpretazione di fatti complessi, deideologizzandoli, e che sottrae nel contempo gli avvenimenti al terreno dello scontro politico per affidarli al giudizio della Storia. L'interesse che ha sollecitato il testo in questione è quello di ampliare i confini della ricerca storiografica anche con gli strumenti del revisionismo storico, quando sia necessario -, tramite un ripensamento ed un inquadramento prospettico delle vicende socialdemocratiche che rapporti la loro azione ad una più ampia scala di riferimento: quella della politica internazionale e dei condizionamenti politico-economico-militari internazionali. L'obiettivo di A. De Felice è stato quello di superare, pur tenendone in debito conto, le inadeguatezze strutturali della storiografia precedente, cercando nuovi criteri e modalità d'approccio. Compito in cui l'Autore è pienamente riuscito.
