Couverture rigide. Rare exemplaire. ENGLISH : Modern half-leather binding in light brown (20th-century binding), spine with raised bands blind-stamped, all edges gilt, renewed endpapers. Some minor dampstains and occasional scattered foxing. Very good overall condition. New 16th-century edition of the rhetorical orations in three parts by Aelius Aristides (117c.185), a Greek rhetorician and sophist active during the Antonine period. This Latin translation was completed by Willem Canter (15421575), a Dutch classical scholar and philologist, whose aim was not only to make classical texts accessible but also to restore them in accordance with proper grammatical norms. Here, he tackles the Orationes Rhetoricae of Aristides, who had studied in Cotiaeum under the grammarian Alexander, and later in Athens under the most prominent masters. Aristides fell gravely ill during a journey to Egypt and developed a deep connection to Asclepius, the god of medicine. According to his own account, it was thanks to Asclepius that he maintained a minimal vital force, which he was then able to channel into writing and oratory. A rare and desirable copy.
