Il vécut pourtant à Rome. Voilà à peu près les seuls renseignements dignes de foi que nous ayons sur l auteur des Deipnosophistes, ou…Banquet des sophistes, précieux témoignage à la fois d une forme littéraire et d un mode de sociabilité particulièrement fécond dans l Antiquité : le banquet. À la fin du repas, les convives abordent des sujets très variés et font entendre les fragments d oeuvres qu ils connaissent par coeur, mais dont la voix s est effacée pour nous. Les Deipnosophistes constituent donc une sorte de bibliothèque fantôme. Consacré aux plaisirs, le livre XII offre une réflexion, entièrement menée par Athénée, sur les individus célèbres pour s être adonnés au plaisir. Selon lui, le plaisir est lié à toutes sortes de vices. Les hommes s enivrent et perdent souvent toute virilité en se fardant et en se parfumant. Et surtout, le plaisir estsource d une hubris qui peut conduire au meurtre les histoires violentes abondent dans ce livre. Dans la dernière histoire, le lien entre plaisir et folie offre une conclusion piquante : le plaisir ne serait-il jamais si grand que lorsqu on a perdu la raison ? Même le texte ne nous est connu que de manière partielle, puisqu'il fut abrégé au moins deux fois. Il n'en reste pas moins un formidable témoignage à la fois d'une forme littéraire et d'un mode de sociabilité particulièrement fécond dans l'Antiquité, le banquet. Ce « banquet des sophistes » est donné par P. Livius Larensis, riche lettré, et sans doute le protecteur d'Athénée. A la fin du repas, les convives abordent, tandis que les cratères se vident, des sujets aussi variés que l'amour, la philosophie, Homère, la meilleure façon d'accommoder tel mets ou le meilleur auteur de comédie. Notre édition rassemble en un volume les extraits des deux premiers livres qui nous sont parvenus. L'introduction fait le point sur les connaissances relatives à l'auteur et à la période, et offre un portrait convaincant de cet érudit, mi-enseignant, mi-bibliothécaire, que devait être Athénée. Suit une longue étude des influences et des sources particulièrement éclairante, car le Banquet des Sophistes, foisonnant de citations, est pour nous une véritable bibliothèque d'uvres perdues, comme celles du poète comique Epicrates.
