Book
Original softcover. Condition: Gut. XIX, 213 p., many ill. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Slightly rubbed, slight staining on bottom edge, crease in the back cover, otherwise very good. / Leicht berieben, leichte Anschmutzung auf Fußschnitt, Falte im hinteren Buchdeckel, sonst sehr gut. - Barbara Hughes Fowler introduces us to The Hellenistic Aesthetic by encouraging us to attend carefully to its "sparkle and music": "Hellenistic poetry brought to Western literature many of the qualities which we think of as modem: an interest in animals (especially pets), babies, children, women, and grotesques; common or working people and the tools of their trades; landscapes; cities; the passions of romantic love and of sinning; pathos; burlesque. The literature parallels the subject matter of the visual arts, where we find fishermen, hunchbacks, dancing dwarfs, drunken old women, women who have died in childbirth, kitchen utensils, and the expression of emotion in the faces of creatures as well as people. The new interest in genre scenes, in everyday people and their pursuits, is commonly understood to be the result of the decline of the city-state. Just as people turned to the individualistic philosophies of Stoicism and Epicureanism, so artists turned to the portrayal of the personal passions, the particulars of life. Literature became romantic rather than classical. So much surely is true. There were, however, other factors that shaped the literary and visual arts of the period. What went hand in hand with an interest in the particular and the individual was an increasing realism. . . . This appears not only in the subject matter itself but in the craft which presented that subject matter. The two are quite inseparable. It is this interaction of poet and artist, of subject and craft, that 1 wish to explore." Fowler s work is the only book on Hellenistic culture that treats both literature and the art forms of the period as equivalent intertwined manifestations of an identifiable aesthetic. She demonstrates that literature and art shared subjects, moods, themes, and techniques. She shows how the refinements of the visual arts, for example, are paralleled by the marked musicality of Hellenistic verse. The book s epilogue brings us to the present in discussions of the persistence of the Hellenistic aesthetic in the poetry of Cavafy and in Lawrence Durrell s Alexandria Quartet. Combining a lucid and graceful text with over 100 illustrations, Barbara Hughes Fowler s The Hellenistic Aesthetic can be enjoyed and appreciated by general readers interested in the ancient world, as well as by students of the classics. - Barbara Hughes Folwer is the John Bascom Professor of Classics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The author of many influential articles on aspects of classical literature and aesthetics, she is now preparing for publication an anthology of her own translations of Hellenistic poetry.
