A good history of the volunteer fire department, illustrated with vintage photographs including spectacular fires, horse-drawn engines, etc. Phoenix Engine Company No. 1 was organized on August 12, 1886. The early volunteer companies continued until about 1912 when the city enacted a fire department with a chief and paid members. It was motorized in 1914. Lists members of the various volunteer companies, all the fire chiefs, etc. Covers the first fire house, first paid members, first fire alarms and sump boxes, the modernization of the central fire station, mascots, and more. Also includes stories and reminiscences of some of the old timers.
