Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First edition. Octavo. Disbound. The text block is otherwise about very good, small chip at corner of first leaf, just touching the inscription. Inscribed on the front free endpaper to Dawn Powell, her husband, and son: "To Dawn & Jo & JoJo, and all the great times we had all the fun and drinks and hoopla! Em Jo." Dawn Powell, a satirical, proto-feminist novelist who was forgotten, and been rediscovered, was friendly with Emanuel Jo Basshe and other members of The New Playwrights Theatre in New York in the late 1920s. In her diaries Powell mentions a party in Hell's Kitchen after the opening of Basshe's play *Earth* on March 9th, 1927. This warmly inscribed copy of *The Centuries* reveals a close relationship between the two writers that included Powell's autistic son JoJo. A nice association copy of this play about immigrants to America.
