An 1875 adultery trial in which he was accused of having an affair with a married woman was one of the most famous American trials of the Nineteenth century.

Bound in mauve cloth over bevelled boards, decorated in blind to both boards, with horses and lettering in gilt to upper board and spine. Very heavy wear to binding, with tears along edges of spine, heavy scattered rubbing and mottling to cloth, tears to bumped corners, rubbing and bumping to edges and extremities, and losses to head and tail of spine. Cracking front hinge and shaken text block have been reinforced with archival adhesive and are now quite firm and sound. Several center gatherings proud. Light foxing and toning to pages throughout, heaviest at tissue-guards and plates, else unmarked. An admittedly worn but overall sound 1873 first edition of this comprehensive review for the care and keeping of "the most noble and useful of domestic animals,--the horse," with an introduction by Henry Ward Beecher and a treatise on "Agriculture and the Horse" by Hon. George B. Loring, fully illustrated throughout with 14 tissue-guarded plates of the best trotting stock-horses in the United States, with their pedigrees, records, and full descriptions.

Dimensions 2 1/2 x 4 inches (card), 2 1/8 x 3 1/4 (photo). From back of photo : "Published by E. & H.T. Anthony 501 Broadway New York from photographic negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery" Reverend Beecher (1813-1887) was a prominent clergyman, abolitionist and speaker. His sister was the author Harriet Beecher Stowe. The later part of his life was marred by the Beecher-Tilton Scandal, in which the Reverend was accused of adultery with a married woman. The resulting trail in 1875 was one of the most infamous trials of the century.
Condition: Very Good, some wear.

Ephemera. Condition: Good + overall. A song broadside concerning the alleged affair between Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, a gifted orator and sometime resident of Peekskill NY and the wife of Theodore Tilton, which first was made public in 1872 and culminated with Beecher's trial in 1875. He was the brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin". The Beecher-McFadden Estate is on the National Register of Historic Places, and is opposite Beach Shopping Center. A song (without the music). The first line is "The Beecher scandal's all the rage." OCLC: 27879678 states that it is similar in format and typography to a number of songs published by Bell & Company of San Francisco in the 1870s; whoever the publisher was, the imprint was possibly left off because of the suggestive nature of some of the lyrics.
