Published by [?New York: Burt Goldblatt, c.1950], 1950
Seller: Peter Harrington. ABA/ ILAB., London, United Kingdom
Delightfully pensive study of one of the great jazz composers, apparently unpublished. "There is no doubt that Swee' Pea, as Ellington called him, made an immense impact on his boss's music. Even if he had done no more than write "Lush Life" and "Take the 'A' Train", Strayhorn would still have been guaranteed a place in jazz history" (Cook & Morton). Strayhorn (1915-1967) started writing for Ellington in 1939 and within a year was arranging songs for the band. "The two men established a collaboration so tight that it was difficult even for people who knew the music well to tell their work apart" (Collier, p. 255). Aside from "Lush Life" and "A Train" Strayhorn's other inextinguishable composition is the noirish and smouldering "Chelsea Bridge" - particularly in the versions by Ducal tenorists Paul Gonsalves and Ben Webster. The lensman is almost certainly Burt Goldblatt (1924-2006), one of the preeminent jazz photographers, who captured countless memorable images over a lengthy career, alongside his work as an award-winning album cover designer. An image by Goldblatt that shows Ellington and Strayhorn working through a number in the studio has Strays wearing the same floral print shirt and rolled zip-neck sweater; the date is probably sometime in the mid-50s. "Goldblatt used black-and-white photographs for his LP album covers, including studio shots and portraits that captured musicians in simple, unguarded moments" (LA Times obituary). James Lincoln Collier, The Making of Jazz: A Comprehensive History, 1978; Richard Cook and Brian Morton, The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings, ninth edition, 2008. Original silver gelatin print ( "8 x 10", 259 x 204 mm), overall 427 x 370 mm framed and glazed. A couple of minor creases otherwise in excellent condition.

Signed
A visually striking document, with a wonderful group of Ellingtonian signatures. The original contract for the song "Blossom," signed by co-authors Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, together with Duke's sister Ruth James, who Duke had installed as president of his Tempo Music company, and witnessed by his long-time mistress Mildred Dixon. The song was recorded sometime in 1953-5 and released on the album "Ellington Showcase" in '55. The young composer and pianist Billy Strayhorn offered his composition "Lush Life" to Duke Ellington in 1938; less than a year later Strayhorn had become an arranger and pianist with the Ellington band, a collaboration that was to last until Strayhorn's death in 1967. His classical and jazz training, combined with sophisticated taste, was appreciated by Ellington, who described "Sweetpea" as "my listener, my most dependable appraiser and critic." Among the works that Strayhorn composed alone or with Ellington are the classics "Take the A Train," "Chelsea Bridge," "Passion Flower", "Johnny Come Lately", and of course the magnificent "Lush Life". Four-page printed "Uniform Popular Songwriters Contract", on a bifolium of moderate yellow paper-stock, page size 415 x 215 mm. Median horizontal fold, else fine.
