Book
Soft cover. Condition: VG. 18pp extract, printed in double columns, illustrated with 7 drawings by the author, and 1 photo portrait, minor water staining at bottom margins, salvaged from a damaged issue of The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, Volume LI, No. 3, January, 1896. The author's important account of the Norwegian sealing and whaling expedition of the ship Antarctic, 1893 - 1895, led by Henrik Johan Bull, in which Borchgrevink first claims to have been the first man to set foot on Victoria Land, on September 24, 1895. From the text, "I do not know whether it was to catch the jelly-fish, or from a strong desire to be the first man to put foot on this terra incognita, but as soon as the order was given to stop pulling the oars, I jumped over the side of the boat. I thus killed two birds with one stone, being the first man on shore, and relieving the boat of my weight, thus enabling her to approach land near enough to let the captain jump ashore dry-shod." Sections include In The Forecastle, The Start, An Adventure On Campbell Island, The Fate Of A Message, An Accident, Color Of Antarctic Birds, The Outlook From The Crow's - Nest, The Message From The Gale, Antarctic Ice, Peculiar Marks On The Antarctic Seals, The Ice - Pack, Accident To The Chief Engineer, Victoria Land, Possession Island And Its Penguins, Discovery Of Vegetation, The First Landing On The Antarctic Continent, Future Exploration, Antarctica, After Small Whales, The Aurora, Sperm - Whales, Commercial Possibilities, and the second title, which is a preface by Greely. Illustrations include a view of the ship in a glacier sea, the Midnight Sun on Christmas Eve, Mount Sabine and Mount Robinson, Borchgrevink scaling the highest peak on Possession Island, a view of a longboat making the first landing on Victoria Land, the landing place on the mainland, and lancing a whale in the Ice - Floes. Housed in protective mylar report cover.

hardcover. 1901 First Edition. xvi, 333pp, 32pp adverts, 186 illusts, 3 folding maps, original dark blue highly decorative boards, ship design to front board, t.e.g., private bookplate, inscr, Fine, signed on the half title by C. E. Borchgrevink, London, 28/2/1901. A beautiful copy in the bright original elaborate binding. Borchgrevink recruited Sir George Newnes, the publisher, as a sponsor for this expedition, on board the Southern Cross. His plan was to make deep sea and inshore soundings, collect natural history specimens, make pendulum observations, take meteorological data and attempt to reach Magnetic Pole and South Pole. Borchgrevink had been denigrated by Sir Clements Markham for, as Markham perceived, having usurped funds and priority from the British National Antarctic Expedition.
