Condition: New.

Folio (340 x 275 mm). Stiff dark blue wrappers with original publisher's wrapper laid down to upper. 55 pp. + Violin: 23 pp. With printed dedicated to head of title "Joseph Joachim freundschaftlichst zugeeignet." Slightly worn and soiled; handstamps to upper and title "Lebermann", "Musikalien-Handlung - Jul. Offhaus Nachfig Wilh. Weis - Breslau, Königstrasse 5." Performance annotations in pencil to violin part. First Edition in this form. "[Bruch's] friendships with such violinists as David, Joachim, Sarasate, and Willy Hess, and the advice he received from them, inspired nine concerted works for that instrument, which "can sing a melody better than a piano, and melody is the soul of music." .His utter distaste for and outspoken criticism of the New German School of Wagner and Liszt isolated him more and more throughout his life. His reverence for the music of Mendelssohn and Schumann and his resistance to change meant that works written at the end of his life, such as the chamber music of 1918, sounded much the same as those compositions dating from 60 years earlier, although his ability to orchestrate almost equaled his melodic invention. He wrote three symphonies (1868, 1870, 1882), all of which contain good material. Bruch was respected as a teacher in his later years, with Respighi and Vaughan Williams among his pupils in his Berlin composition classes. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by Cambridge University in 1893." Christopher Fifield in Grove Music Online.

Condition: Very Good. Octavo, 1 page (the first page of a bifolium). Three horizontal creases (where folded for posting), with a few light creases to the top margin (from handling), an unobtrusive small light stain, and some light foxing; overall, in very good condition. Bruch writes to an unnamed recipient ('Mein lieber Freund'), thanking him and his wife for a letter of congratulations, exclaiming 'Ich glaube wirklich, man kann sagen, "Hermione" ist durch!'. His opera 'Hermione' had premiered in Berlin several days earlier, on 21 March 1872. Bruch notes a favourable review in the 'Neue Freie Presse' (he believes by Julius Rodenberg), and asks the addressee to have it published in English and other foreign papers. Max Bruch (1838-1920) is best known for his Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, first performed in 1866. 'Hermione', adapted from Shakespeare's 'The Winter's Tale', has not made it into the standard operatic repertoire.
