About the author:Gilbert Burnet (18 September 1643 - 17 March 1715) was a Scottish philosopher and historian, and Bishop of Salisbury. He was fluent in Dutch, French, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Burnet was highly respected as a cleric, a preacher, an academic, a writer and a historian. He was always closely associated with the Whig party, and was one of the few close friends in whom King William III confided.[Source: Wiki]About the work:He next undertook, at the suggestion of Sir William Jones, the attorney-general, his 'History of the Reformation in England,' for which Evelyn contributed some materials. For a while he was hindered in his researches in the Cotton Library by Lauderdale's influence and misrepresentation of his object, but after the publication of the first volume he was granted free access. This publication, however, did not take place until 1679, when, the country being in the throes of the popish terror, the spirit in which the work is written caused it to receive so enthusiastic a welcome, that the thanks of both houses were given to him, with a request that he would complete the work. The second volume appeared in 1681, with equal applause; it is said that the historical portion was written in the space of six weeks; the third and last volume was published in 1714; the abridgment of the whole work in 1719.[Source: WikiSource, taken from Dictionary of National Biography, 1885-1900, Volume 07 - Burnet, Gilbert by Osmund Airy].

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. A very attractive copy in contemporary full calf binding with gilt tooled spine, marbled edges and endpapers. Pages are xx, xvi, 1-949. Portrait frontispiece and a few small engravings in text (this is not the later version with plates). The book was the property of Lord Porchester, 4th Earl of C…arnavon, of Highclere Castle. There is a nice gift inscription on the flyleaf from William H Trumantle, gifting the book to Porchester on his leaving Eton, and a bookplate "Highclere of Highclere" on the front pastedown. Also a later owner's name shown. The binding has some minor wear including a dig to the spine and a short crack to the top joint, but the binding is sound and the pages are very clean.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Six volumes - 2 parts each of volumes I, II, and III. Seems to be original covers - a sort of plastic sheathing over cloth, plastic scuffed and faded, bubbling, large pieces peeled out of three spines (interesting sneak peek of the spine cover paper, which is upside down from the book binding!). Pages… rough cut, very good, light foxing - more heavy on the first few pages and on illustrations and frontises. Bindings tight, multiple black and white plates. NOT ex-library.

Full Leather. Condition: Very Good. Full-Leather. No Jacket. Fourth Edition [1st 1692]. Privately Printed. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. An enduring treatise on the duties of pastors to their flocks. At random, from this book: "There is another sort of sick Persons, who abound more in Towns than in the Country; those are the troub…led in Mind; of these there are two Sorts, some have committed erroneous Sins, which kindle a Storm in their Consciences; and that ought to be Cherished till they have compleated a Repentance proportioned to the Nature and Degree of their Sin. If Wrong has been done to another, Reparation and Restitution must be made to the utmost of the Party's Power. If Blood has been shed, a long Course of Fasting and Prayer; a total Abstinence from Wine, if Drunkenness gave the Rise to it; a making up the Loss to the Family on which it has befallen, must be enjoyned." The book's 244 pages are filled with ancient wisdom as pertinent now as then. Full Contemporary calf in handsome condition: rich patina, five raised bands on spine with gilt decorations and clear Morocco label. All pages and end pages present. Gilt decorations on cover-edges. Minor professional restoration at spine's head. Interior crisp with almost no browning or foxing. Some bumps, rounded corners, all making for the book's character. Tightly bound.
