PREMIÈRE EDITION (Seconde édition: Paris, Tanera, 1860). Dès le 27 avril 1859, l'auteur est envoyé par le directeur du journal "L'Observateur Belge" couvrir la guerre austro-franco-sarde. Il quitte Bruxelles le lendemain et envoie sa première lettre de Paris le 29. Il fait la route jusqu'à Turin, où il arrive le 2 mai, en compagnie d'un officier d'administration qui a combattu à Zaatcha en 1849 et qui lui fait le récit de la bataille (pp31-40). Il suit les troupes françaises sans discontinuer à la fois sur les champs de bataille et aux sièges successifs du Grand Quartier Général, envoie au fur et à mesure un total de 63 lettres à Bruxelles, extrêmement circonstanciées, dans lesquelles il décrit de manière très vivante les moindres détails de ses observations, et ne rentre en Belgique qu'après la signature du traité de Villafranca (17 juillet), sa dernière lettre étant datée de Plaisance, la veille. Poplimont, auteur du "Sequin du Juif", le tout premier roman mettant en scène la Légion étrangère, écrit après un voyage en Algérie et publié à Gand en 1844, a éprouvé un intérêt d'autant plus vif pour ce Corps que son frère était légionnaire. La lecture de la table des matières permet de repérer rapidement une dizaine de pages où la Légion est citée, quantité qu'une lecture approfondie ne peut qu'accroître. La Guerre d'Italie de 1859 a opposé 120.000 Français commandés par Napoléon III et 40.000 Sardes commandés par le Roi de Piémont Victor-Emmanuel II à 180.000 puis 270.000 Autrichiens commandés par l'Empereur François-Joseph. Battu, celui-ci cédera la Lombardie à la France, qui la remettra au Piémont en échange de Nice et de la Savoie. Charles Poplimont (1821-1887), né à Termonde (Belgique), débuta très jeune une carrière militaire au cours de laquelle il parvint au grade de Maréchal-des-Logis mais qu'il ne poursuivit pas. Autodidacte, il se consacra à l'écriture de romans historiques sans grand intérêt littéraire. Il se lança également dans le journalisme, couvrant notamment la Campagne d'Italie de 1859 pour "L'Observateur belge", reportage qui eut beaucoup d'impact et qui fut réédité en volume. Il se consacra ensuite à la rédaction de dossiers généalogiques destinés à la bourgeoisie et à la noblesse belges et d'ouvrages héraldiques concernant la noblesse belge et française. Considéré en son temps comme un spécialiste de ces matières, ses travaux doivent être pris en compte avec une grande prudence, fourmillant d'erreurs, volontaires ou involontaires, notamment d'alliances et de filiations probablement inventées de toutes pièces pour satisfaire l'orgueil des familles concernées.
