Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1880. First edition. 222pp. and a frontispiece. This is a collection of fifteen tales selected from old volumes of 'Chambers's Journal. It includes The Legend of the Happy Valley, The Mad Englishman, The First Offence, Recollections of an Italian, and The Death Blanket. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and black designs with a gold emblem on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and light staining on the boards. There is wear to the cloth on the corner tips and the spine ends are bumped with a little damage to the cloth at the bottom of the spine and some fraying at the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with light foxing to the fore edge of the text block and a little scattered light foxing within the book. There is a crease across the top corner of page 61. A name has been written on the half-title page and there is an inscription on the front free endpaper. The free endpapers are very browned and there is a bookplate on the front fixed endpaper.
