Among those who came were people of wealth and quality who transported, by sea, furnishings that were superior in craftsmanship and design. Accomplished cabinetmakers arriving later from Great Britain ad the United States continued the tradition with their skills and developed taste; father taught son, and son preserved the craft. This book deals with twelve of the most eminent craftsmen in the area over the last two hundred years. Author Charles Foss discusses Loyalist and other influences, the choice of woods, the evolution of design and decoration. He has compiled biographical information on the craftsmen, their families and business relationships wherever facts are known, and the furniture illustrated was carefully chosen to be representative of the thousands of fine pieces existing today in collections and in the homes of descendants. Accompanying each piece, a caption describes in depth the style, special features, materials, and often the history of a particular item, making this book a valuable reference for collectors. Charles Foss has served as chairman of the accessions committee of the New Brunswick Museum. In 1967, he became Collections Curator at Kings Landing Corporation, Fredericton, New Brunswick. Richard Vroom s superb photography illuminates a legacy of hand-crafted furniture left behind by skilled cabinetmakers with a deep pride in their craft and in individual accomplishment. This folio sized book, 156 pages measuring 328mm X 250mm, is in near-fine condition. The dust jacket is in very-good condition and is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap. The book on the subject.
