Frank on 7 x 13 cm panel cut from front of envelope. In good condition, lightly aged, laid down on part of leaf from album, with the reverse carrying part of the frank to a letter from another unidentified individual, with free postmark from 1826. Byron's frank has the customary red-ink postmark at top right ('FREE | 8 DE 8 | 18…26'), and is laid out by him in the customary fashion: 'Portsmouth December Seven | 1826 | The Honble. Mrs. Collingwood | Hawkhurst | Kent'. Byron's signature 'Byron.', at bottom left, is only underlined, and not enclosed within the two parallel lines as required. There is a naval connection between Byron and the addressee. Collingwood House was bought by the celebrated Admiral (of Trafalgar fame) in 1816 for his daughter and her husband George Newnham. It was later the residence of astronomer Sir John Herschel.

4to, 2 pp. Thirty-two lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged and creased paper. A tactful letter in response to an enquiry concerning the possibility of employment as a translator of Dutch publications. Unwins 'very seldom have occasion to translate from Dutch, but we should always be glad to give consideration to… any important Dutch book which you were able to bring to our attention'. He suggests times when Thompson might be able to meet Stanley Unwin, who is travelling on the continent. Thompson's 'best plan' would be to get the catalogues of 'the most important Dutch publishers' and 'keep on the lookout for important books [.] bring them to the attention of an English publisher, having first ascertained that the translation rights are available and not under offer elsewhere [.] Our own list of would-be translators is a long one and we have not sufficient work of this nature to give out in order to keep our regular people fully employed'.

He is friendly with the neighbor girl, Mimsey. After his mother dies, Gogo is taken to England by his uncle who gives him an English name based on his mother's maiden name, transforming Gogo into Peter Ibbetson. This tale of a love that transcends all obstacles relates the story of two young lovers who are separated in childhood and then drawn together by destiny years later. Even though they are separated in real life because Peter is unjustly convicted of murder (it was actually self-defense), they discover they can dream themselves into each other's consciousness while asleep. She has seen Russell's 'envoyé', who had 'planned a road, which he assures me cannot be objected to, and can easily be intro-duced [sic] into and carried out with your proposed alterati…ons'. She notes a gate in a wall, which is to be 'made opposite the turn of the road towards our stables, so as to give room for the turn', and hopes Russell will 'look over the plan before it is again shown' to her, and she is sending 'the very stiff and uncivil reply to our requisitions', which she hopes he will 'carefully consider & then call here and convince your self of the truth of my memoranda'.

See Knox's entry in the Oxford DNB. The two items are in fair condition, lightly aged and creased, each with a couple of lightly-rusted pin holes. Clemens's plain card, with stamps and postmarks, is addressed to 'E. V. Knox Esq / c/o Punch / London, England.', and is signed 'faithfully / C C Clemens'. The message reads: 'Dear E.…V. Knox / We hope the life of President Truman reached you safely? / The Society is arranging a symposium on democracy You may care to send your definition of democracy and a few comments. / Are you writing your Memoirs?' The unsigned typed carbon copy of Knox's reply is 1p, 12mo. After thanking Clemens for the book and the card he writes: 'I don't think my views on Democracy are very original. It seems to me simply a right to express an opinion. By Vote? Perhaps. In print? Possibly. By consent of the Police? NO. Good luck with the Society.' He ends with a witty twist: 'As for my memoirs, well I've been asked [last word underlined] to write them by several people. There are limits of course - even to Democracy.'.
