Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. TUBA A TREATISE ON THE TUBA BY DONALD W. STAUFFER U.S. NAVY 1989 INSCRIBED SOFT COVER. As I was able to discern the Author of this book was a well-known personality in the world of music. Herewith an excerpt from his obituary published in Alabama: Donald W. Stauffer, age…92, Commander, US Navy (Retired) passed away Thursday, November 17, 2011. He was born in Canton, Ohio, on July 30, 1919. He held BM and MM degrees from Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, and a PhD from the Catholic University of America. He played tuba and doublebass in the Rochester Philharmonic and the United States Navy Band before conducting Navy Bands in New York and Norfolk. He was Head, Academic Training Department of the Navy School of Music before named Leader of the United States Navy Band in 1969. Upon retirement he was appointed Associate Professor at Birmingham Southern College and later at Samford University. He founded the Birmingham Community Concert Band in 1980 and served as conductor until 2003. He composed and arranged over 40 published numbers and authored five books. His best-known composition is "Fugue 'N Swing", and most recognized books are "Intonation Deficiencies of Wind Instruments", and "A Treatise on the Tuba". He is a recognized researcher in the Acoustics of Musical Instruments and has published studies in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America and the New York Academy of Science. His articles on musical topics have appeared in the Journal of the 1962 All Eastern Band Clinic, and in the Bandworld and Instrumentalist Magazines. This small soft cover book (5 ½ x 8 ½ inches 280 pages) was published by the Stauffer Press of Birmingham, Alabama dated 1989 and is the revised and enlarged edition. It is bound in plain white soft boards with black titles on cover and spine. The book is well illustrated throughout with b&w photos drawings and musical scoring. It is inscribed by Commander Stauffer on the first blank page. Condition: This book is in very good condition. There is some discoloration to the front cover from what appears to be a light stain or handling (please see the photos). The lower right-hand corner of the front cover is bumped and slightly bent. Inside the only mark I found in the Author s inscription; the interior pages and illustrations are clean and bright throughout. The binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Inscribed by Author.
