Paperback. 288p., first trade edition softbound in 7.5x4.5 inch plain printed terra cotta wraps. Covers are edgeworn with damaged spine panel: expect a one-inch chip to the head, severe sunning and deep readers' creases. Front cover is split along joint 2 inches at head, a quarter-inch at tail. Textblock (entirely in the French language, mind you) is toned throughout but just slightly fragile, sound enough to handle, clean (allowing for pervasive dust), and free of ownerships or any other markings. His work preceded that of Freud, and was in opposition to some of the latter's ideas, although considered an important influence. His first important title, L'automatisme Psychologique," was published in 1889. **This work features chapters on " Miracles and Animal Magnetism," "Cures Derived from Magnetism," "Therapies of Religious Origin," "Mental Agencies," "The Utilization of Automatism," "Forms of Mental Economy," "Psychic Income," "Applications," and "Psychotherapy." The first couple of chapters are interesting in that he discusses the American, Mary Baker Eddy, (1821-1910) whom he describes as a "neurotic paraplegic" from Bow, New Hampshire, who's physical and mental rehabilitation under the care of Dr. P.P. Quimby, inspired the former's career as a healer and founder of the Christian Scientist movement which was based around Boston. (Janet visited Boston in 1865.) Janet critiques the American experience of Spiritualism, including such things as seances and hypnotism, as being largely debunked by the French Academy of Science, and emerging as largely being in the province of "charlatanism." Interesting topics. With index. Book.

3 Bll., 197 S., Gr.-8°, Priv. Halbleinen d. Zt. 1901 erschien eine englische Ausgabe beider Teile ("The Mental State of Hystericals"). - Einband berieben; Rücken mit Bibliotheksschild u. stark eingerissen; Vorsätze u. Titel mit gelöschtem Bibliotheksstempel; Seiten leicht gebräunt, sonst gutes Expl. (Bindung ist innen fest). - Selten.
