The author was a first generation Irish who writes of his family and his upbringing on a farmstead at the Arkansas River and South Hydraulic Street in Wichita Kansas where he was born in 1885. His father, Florence or Big Flurry, was from Ireland, married a girl from New York and moved to Wichita to become a farmer, a profession he was not good at. The author tells of family life, his upbringing, the problems of being Irish and Catholic in Kansas, and of a multitude of family problems both farming and marital. The author went on to graduate from Friends University, was the editor of the Wichita Eagle in 1912, and later moved to New York where he was a successful journalist and columnist. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. The Macmillan Company, New York. 1946. Hardcover. Stated First Edition. Inscribed by the author on the FFFP dated 1946. Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Very Good; slight bumping to tips; light shelfwear to head, tail, and tips. DJ: Good; NOT Price Clipped ($3.00); wear and missing small pieces at head, tail, and tips; light suntoning to spine. Green cloth boards and spine with yellow lettering on the spine. Clean internals. Inner hinges are sound and not split. 256 pp 8v. A typically American dream- the dream of an education as an escape from the dreary monotony of farm life- is told here in articulate, beautiful prose. It is the story of the author's own youth; but because so much of it represents the universal longings and struggles of thousands of Midwestern young people, it will have an appeal beyond its intrinsic interest as part of a successful journalist's autobiography. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket. Inscribed by Author(s).
