Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. THEODORE WINTHROP BY ELLSWORTH ELIOT JR. 1938 FIRST YOUNG UNION OFFICER KILLED IN CIVIL WAR. Theodore Winthrop was a young lawyer, graduate of Yale University and international traveler. He was reportedly the first Union Officer killed during the early days of the Civil Wa…r. Apparently, he enlisted in the 7th Regiment of the New York State Militia which provided volunteer troops in response to President Lincoln s call to defend Washington and the Union, in 1861. He was killed leading the troops during the Battle of Big Bethel, picked off by a sharpshooter. This small and quite slender hard cover book (6 ¼ x 9 ½ inches, 29 pages) was published by the Yale University Library in New Haven dated 1938. Condition: This book is in very good condition but it is ex-library, from the Forbes Library of Northampton, Massachusetts, from which it was duly withdrawn. It has the usual library marks including a poorly executed number on the spine as the shelf number. There is a card pocket on the rear endpaper. The book is also marked with penciled bookseller s notes on the front endpaper. The interior pages are clean and bright and very presentable. Language: ENG.
