Full smooth calf tree leather binding; spine with gilt tooled compartments and five raised bands and gilt lettered maroon title label; boards with gilt borders and corner gilt decorative elements; gilt inner dentelles. Features poetry selections mostly on versos with b/w illustrations mostly on opposing rectos. Founded in 1780, the London bookselling firm of John and Edward Bumpus had a royal warrant and stayed in business into the 20th century. The firm contracted binding out to various prominent London firms such as Riviere, Zaehnsdorf, Sangorski & Sutcliffe, etc. so the aforementioned Bumpus stamp is, in actuality, a retailer mark rather than a bindery mark but its presence is still indicative of premier London work. Four pages, 16mo, bifolium, some staining, closed tear on joint, but text clear and complete, as follows: "I am sorry that I cannot give you the information about Charles Keene that you ask for. I know that he made some drawings on wood for me - for 'yellow backs' but forget what they were, remembering only some were for Bulwer Lytton's novels, nor do I remember the date, but it was when he had a large top room, over an Engineer's shop in the Strand, about opposite Norfolk Street, before he drew for 'Punch'. I cannot claim the praiseworthy foresight you credit me with, for I have no record of the drawings, so I suppose he drew them direct on the novel, not making a sketch first which I should have kept. I look'd through my book of sketches a few weeks ago, but do not remember seeing any by him. When I get back to Witley, in about a month, I will look again and let you know if I find any thing.- I had an attack of paralysis 5 [?] years ago, and have not been fit for business since. I shall be here 'till next Tuesday, then at Hastings 3 or 4 weeks before going back to Witley, Surrey. I am glad to now you are writing a biography of C.K. [Charles Keene]". Note: No such biography has been traced.

See the two men's entries in the Oxford DNB. Webb's book contained four engravings from drawings by Birket Foster, the last ('The Tomb of Thomas Lawson') of which is absent. The first has 'E. EVANS Sc.' engraved into the plate; the other two, evidently the work of the same hand, are unattributed. Three proof engravings, on wove paper roughly 20.5 x 13.5. All in good condition, very lightly spotted and worn, and certainly suitable for display. ONE (the frontispiece): Captioned, 'SWARTHMOOR HALL. / From a Drawing by Birket Foster.' TWO: 'SWARTHMOOR MEETING-HOUSE, / From a Drawing by Birket Foster.' THREE: 'MARSH GRANGE. / The ancient residence of the Askew Family in Furness, and the Birth-place of Margaret Fell.
