Hardcover. xvi, 323 p.; 22.5 cm. (Library of constructive theology) [First printed in 1931; reprint of corrected 3rd edition] `And, as success in the worldly calling is a manifest sign of divine election, the practical conclusion is close at hand that God helps those who help themselves, and that the amassing of business profits is the surest way of doing God's will. In this way, by an astonishing reversal of all that its founders dreamed of and and stood for, Puritanism became the effective drive behind the Industrial Revolution and inspired the laissez-faire philosophy. Thus, though it has travelled down the opposite path from that followed by the Lutheran movement, Calvinism arrived at the same point. So completely did it identify religion with the non-religious activities of spirit that it has failed to control them effectively by spiritual and religious standards. Lutheran religion held aloof from the world, entrenched in private religious experience, and has therefore failed to redeem the world. Calvinist religion identified itself so completely with worldly activities as to find in the end that the world is too strong for it.' (p. 28 f.) Good orig. navy cloth, spine ends frayed. A little ink scoring.

Hardcover. 224 p.; 9 halftone pl.; 22 cm. After ten years as Bishop of Coventry, with the blitz and ruin of the cathedral at the close, `Few doubed that Mervyn was bound for promotion (if that is indeed the right word to use). He had been sounded in a roundabout way through a typically Garbettian letter about the Archbishopric of Capetown. But to have gone to South Africa at this juncture would have been far too much like running away. Later on he was felt to have established a certain claim to the Primacy itself, and indeed, after William Temple's death, his name was at least under consideration. There were some who hoped to see him at London one day; but he could never have stood the physical strain. Eventually, in the general post which followed Temple's translation from York to Canterbury and Garbett's from Winchester to York, Mervyn was offered the see of Winchester and had little hesitation about accepting. It meant that George Bell was again being passed over, which in itself was nothing short of scandalous, even though no advancement in the hierarchy could have added a cubit to Bell's moral stature. But that was not Mervyn's responsibility, and Winchester was indeed the right place for him, as was widely recognized when this was announced.'
