Published by New York: Worthington Co. [Worthington Company], [no date, circa 1886]., 1886
Seller: David Hallinan, Bookseller, Columbus, MS, U.S.A.
First Edition
382 pages. Hardcover: H 19cm x L 13.5cm. Original dark aquamarine cloth with decorative but now somewhat flaked/dulled stamping to front board and spine; boards rubbed with some soiling, several white discolored patches to boards and spine with largest overlapping spine heel and adjacent rear board bottom corner, spine ends nicked with slight fraying, beveled board edges with light wear at corners. Edges toned with some foxing; faint moisture staining evident to top edge. Some toning to green floral patterned endpapers; mostly light to occasionally mild foxing to interior leaves with b/w plates having shallow moisture stains at their top margins. Binding is firm. A good+ copy. With eight b/w plates including frontispiece all illustrated by J. Schonberg (likely artist James Schonberg) all on unpaged leaves. OCLC indicates London publisher Blackie was first to publish THE CONGO ROVERS in 1885 with the first American edition published by New York's Worthington Company in 1886. This copy does not have a date upon its title page but certainly the binding and typeset are contemporary to circa 1886-1900. Harry Collingwood was the pseudonym of British author William Joseph Cosens Lancaster (1851-1922) who abandoned a Royal Navy career due to severe myopia. Switching to employment as a marine engineer specializing in harbor design, Lancaster started writing nautically based novels (eventually twenty-three in all) between 1886 and 1913 with his nom de plume honoring his personal hero Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood who was Nelson's second in command at Trafalgar.
