Softcover. Condition: very good. Time-Lag in a Control System: "It often happens in physical experiments and in technical processes that there is some physical quantity, subject to random disturbances, which it is required to keep as nearly constant as possible by the operation of some controlling gear. For example, it may be required to keep a room, or a reaction vessel, at a constant temperature by controlling the electric current passing through a heating coil, or steam passing through heating pipes, or the operation of a heating or cooling engine. The operation of the controlling gear could be by trial and error, but it may often be desirable that it shall be made to depend in some definite way on the behaviour of the physical quantity to be controlled (controlling gear); and the apparatus employed (control apparatus). The two together comprise the Control System." No. 756. Volume 235. pp. 415-444. Co-authored by: A. Callender of the Research Department, I.C.I (Alkali) Limited, D.R. Hartree, F.R.S. and A. "Hartree's chief contribution to science was his development of powerful methods of numerical mathematical analysis, which made it possible for him to apply successfully the so-called self-consistent field method to the calculation of atomic wave functions of polyelectronic atoms, that is, those which in the neutral condition have more than one electron surrounding the nucleus. These calculations involved the numerical solution of the partial differential equations of quantum mechanics for many-body systems subject to the usual boundary conditions" (D. S. B. 6: 147). EXCERPT: PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION - In revising the text of this book for a second edition, it has been my intention to preserve its character as an introduction to numerical analysis for those who want to know about numerical methods for the purpose of applying them in practice, when actual numbers take the place of the literal symbols of an algebraic formula. The main change from the first edition is in Chapter VII on the numerical integration of differential equations, which has been largely rearranged and somewhat extended, particularly in the treatment of equations with two-point boundary conditions. I have also included a section on Whittaker's 'cardinal function' in the theory of interpolation, and an account of a method, due to Wilkes, of handling the Choleski method of matrix factorization which, in my view, converts this from a method for specialists (as it seemed to me when the first edition was written) to a practicable method for the occasional user. The treatment of quadrature formulae of the Gauss type has been extended, and a number of other sections have been added or revised . . . Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
