Nationalisme en militarisme zijn vaak…mikpunt van spot. Roorda's toon is herkenbaar uit duizenden: een mengeling van beschouwelijkheid en ironie, ernst en zorgeloosheid, moralisme en satire. In zijn beste vorm produceert hij onnavolgbare prozapirouettes, alledaagse observaties gepaard met duizelingwekkende vergezichten. 'Al geruime tijd ben ik van plan een boekje te schrijven onder de titel Het vrolijke pessimisme. Die titel bevalt me. Ik vind dat hij een mooie klank uit, en hij drukt aardig uit wat ik zou willen zeggen.' Roorda's plan werd niet bewaarheid, maar de bundel die u nu vasthoudt komt bijna een eeuw na dato aan zijn verlangen tegemoet. Het vrolijke pessimisme biedt de lezer het luimigste proza van een montere zwartkijker. Henri Roorda van Eysinga, Frans-Zwitsers schrijver van Nederlandse origine, werd in 1870 in Brussel geboren als zoon van journalist Sicco Roorda, criticus van het koloniale bewind en penvriend van Multatuli en Domela Nieuwenhuis. Henri schreef libertaire verhandelingen over onderwijsvernieuwing en columns voor Zwitserse dagbladen.
