Le révérend Osmond mourut en 1856 et c'est sa petite fille Teuira Henry qui entreprit de reconstituer l'ouvrage à partir des notes et manuscrits de son grand-père, tout en y ajoutant ses recherches personnelles( elle était professeur de l'Ecole Royale d'Honolulu). Elle y consacra sa vie et mourut en 1915, sans avoir vu son oeuvre publiée. Sa famille reussit enfin à publier cet ouvrage en 1928. Le manuscrit fut confié au Bishop Museum pour être mis à la disposition des étudiants. Nous présentons ici la première édition française de 1951. Traduit de l'Anglais par Bertrand Jaunez, le livre est en bon état, broché, non rogné, les tranches sont brunies, l'intérieur du livre en très bon état. Il s'agit de l'ouvrage de base sur la culture Tahitienne: On y trouve tout à la fois, le folklore, les traditions, coutumes, religion, la vie sociale, l'importance de la magie, la relation des guerres et une grande quantité de chants et récits, en langue indigène et traduits en Français. Une bonne part du livre est consacrée à l'étude généalogique des habitants et comporte un gros index( page 641 à 663) des noms cités.
