Richard Greening Hewlett (February 12, 1923 September 1, 2015) was an American public historian best known for his work as the Chief Historian of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. Hewlett is today recognized as one of the most influential federal historians in the United States and was a founding member of both the Society for History in the Federal Government and the National Council on Public History. Ruth R. Harris was the Director of Research and a senior historian with History Associates, Inc. Alan Schriesheim is the Director Emeritus of Argonne National Laboratory, one of the U.S. Department of Energy's largest research centers. Schriesheim is an internationally acclaimed chemist and technology executive. In a career spanning 50 years in industry, academia, and government, Schriesheim was a pioneer in transforming large and highly complex research organizations to yield productive commercialized technology. Charts the history of a representative national laboratory, an institutional form of great importance and interest for late twentieth-century America, taking that history from World War II through the entire Cold War period and to the last decade of the Twentieth Century. Argonne National Laboratory is a federally funded research and development center in Lemont, Illinois, United States. Founded in 1946, the laboratory is owned by the United States Department of Energy and administered by UChicago Argonne LLC of the University of Chicago. The facility is the largest national laboratory in the Midwest. Argonne had its beginnings in the Metallurgical Laboratory of the University of Chicago, formed in part to carry out Enrico Fermi's work on nuclear reactors for the Manhattan Project during World War II. After the war, it was designated as the first national laboratory in the United States on July 1, 1946. In its first decades, the laboratory was a hub for peaceful use of nuclear physics; nearly all operating commercial nuclear power plants around the world have roots in Argonne research.
