Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Here is a scarce antique hardback book of Georgian food and household advice. The Modern Family Receipt Book by Mrs Mary Holland. Undated, but can be pinpointed to 1825. Published by Thomas Tegg, London. A fascinating glimpse into domestic life at the beginning of the 19th century. Possibly in th…e original binding. Condition in detail below. At time of writing I can only find one other copy for sale anywhere. Contents: Agriculture - Rural and Domestic Economy (food preservation and wines); Brewing; Varnishes and Cements; Bleaching, Dyeing, Scouring etc.; Perfumes and Cosmetics; Gardening; Ink; Clothes; Destroying Vermin; Building; Health; Miscellaneous Receipts. *Note the information pertaining to food is more about preserving, curing etc than actual recipes. Inside the pages are tightly bound. They have tanning and spotting sporadically through the text. With the occasional handling mark and brown blemish, and a few rough edges. Toning and spotting to the outside edges. Has a small ink stain to the margin of the first couple of pages. Quite possibly the original binding. Polished calf, with marbled papered boards. Has some perishing of the leather surface on the spine. Rubbing to the corners and spine ends. Chipping to the paper around the outside edges. Rubbing to the papered boards. The gilt titles and bands on the spine remain bright. Has a split in the front joint at the top, but still firmly attached. H 16.5 cm x W 10.5 cm, 308 pages, 0.31 kg. 'The Complete Economical Cook' is a useful Georgian cookery book, putting forward simple and basic recipes for housekeepers and cooks to use, explained in a simple manner. The author also proposes advice on how to manage a family, and how to maintain a proper and healthy diet for the benefit of a family. In this, she advises the importance of having a substantial breakfast. The work also provides advice on how to carve meat, and how to pick the best poultry at the market. At the time that this was originally published, there was a booming popularity for the relatively new genre and market for cookery books. Written by Mary Holland. Very little is known about the life of Mary Holland. The sixteenth edition of Mary Holland's uncommon cookery work. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart.
