Tempera su tavola di legno. 55 x 44 cm. Tempera on wooden panel. A polypartite or compartmentalized icon (kleima scheme), meaning the main image is surrounded by smaller scenes illustrating events from the life of Christ, the Virgin, or the saints. The larger, central scene is clearly the Descent into Hell (Anastasis or Resurrection), which in Orthodox iconography is considered the true representation of Christ's Resurrection. Jesus is depicted trampling the broken gates of Hell and raising Adam and Eve from their sarcophagi, surrounded by a luminous mandorla. The smaller compartments surrounding the central scene most likely depict the Twelve Great Feasts (Dodekaorton), the main events of the liturgical calendar of the Orthodox Church (e.g., the Nativity, the Presentation in the Temple, the Transfiguration, the Entry into Jerusalem, the Ascension, the Dormition of the Virgin, etc.). This type of icon is very common and was often used for home prayer or as a visual liturgical calendar. The icon is unquestionably of the Russian school. The painting style, colors, composition, and use of gold (or yellow ochre to simulate it) for the background and halos are all typical elements of the Russian tradition. Although the painting style is somewhat "archaic" or "traditional" (with elongated figures and dark colors), the presence of the decorated outer border (which appears to be a carved relief imitation of the edge of a riza) and the relatively simple panel place it in a period of intensive production. It most likely dates to the late 18th or early 19th century (circa 17801850). The paint is dark and very worn. Often, icons of this type with compartments were produced in workshops in central Moscow or the surrounding regions for popular sale or for Old Believers (Starovieri), who often favored more traditional and less Westernized styles. The design, with its defined compartments and dark, decorated border (perhaps stamped or molded into gesso/levkas), was a popular form of mass production before icons with metal rizas became prevalent. The wooden panel is thick, with the back showing no integrated or recessed crosspieces, but only traces of old metal hinges or hooks. The paint is very dark, likely due to layers of dirt, smoke, and a heavily oxidized protective varnish (olifa), which gives it a deep, amber appearance. The gold is abraded in many areas, particularly in the central register. 19mo Secolo.
